Hey all,
This is the future site of my upcoming adventures in The Gambia. This blog is for my friends and family to check my progress, read my stories, etc, but I fully recognize that it is open to the public and could be accessed by anyone.
So let me explain. On November 5, 2008, I will be leaving to serve in The Gambia for a US-based volunteer organization (am I even allowed to say the name of the organization? I just figured maybe I'm not allowed to, since I might do something dumb, then write about it on here, and then my name would be associated with this highly recognizable volunteer organization). Anyhoo, I'll be working in the health sector, but I have no idea where in the country, or to which project in particular I will be assigned.
My goal for this blog is to write honestly about what I am thinking, feeling, and experiencing. I write how I speak/think, so it may not always be professional, but hopefully will have an element of my voice.
Thats that. I promise the next entry will be from Gambia.

In case you wondered...
Some people have written asking what they could send to brighten my day, of course you need not send anything, but any of the following would be welcome.
-well-wishes and funny stories from home
-pictures
-magazines(either newsy ones, or trashy celebrity gossip. we all have our vices)
-powdered drink mixes
-powdered food mixes or spices (salad dressing, soup mix, etc)
-candy(dark chocolate and jelly bellies are my favorites)
-stickers (actually, these work well as rewards for kids)
-deoderant?

If this organization has anything to do with "peace" I'm all for it!
Did you take your anthropology classes as preparation for your trip? Just think of all the cool people you'll meet, and all the cultural issues you'll become aware of... people struggle everywhere, and when you put a face on the struggle, it's really powerful.
When you put a face on friendship and intimacy, getting into the window of other people's lives - it's all new and so STRANGE - there's no better way to grow personally and worldly. Just remember that it's a privilege to be able to go and enter other people's lives. You're always a respectful visitor, learning, learning, learning - and sharing. That's the most you can do, and other people might appreciate you for that.
Be yourself - the good human being that you are - not an "ambassador" of some abstract idea or project, though people will force that upon you until you prove that your a real person, interested in people.
